PhD students

We will be recruiting new PhD students to join the lab in Fall 2027.

Interested PhD students should apply to the Ph.D. in Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and list Dr. Marianne Aubin Le Quéré as a faculty advisor. More details are on the application page. Marianne can also advise students in the Informatics Ph.D. program.

If you are interested in joining the lab as a future PhD student, you can send a short email detailing your research interests, with an attached CV, to Marianne (malq@illinois.edu). We get many such emails, and as such we cannot guarantee a response, but this is the best way to express your interest. If you do not receive a response, this is not a reflection of the strength of your application!

Undergraduate and MS students

We plan to recruit 1–3 undergraduate and MS students to join the lab in Spring 2027. This opportunity is open only to students already enrolled at UIUC, at the undergraduate or master’s level. You can join through an independent study (1–4 credits) or a paid research position (up to 12 hours a week).

If you are an iSchool student, you can apply through the iSchool's undergraduate research opportunities page. Otherwise, you can follow the application instructions on this website.

How to apply

  1. Prepare your CV and a few short answers: what motivates you to work with the lab, the research topics you’re interested in (feel free to pitch a project), and the relevant courses you’ve taken.
  2. Describe a project you completed through research, an internship, a course or another experience: why the problem is important, the key technical or methodological challenges, and how you addressed them. A few sentences are enough.
  3. Submit the student application form, signed in with your Illinois Google account.
  4. We will contact applicants in November 2026 for an interview.
